Blackwater Bay/Milton Florida

Reliable Dogs. Real-World Results.

Professional Dog Training Built for Everyday Life

At TopTierK9 Blackwater Bay, dog training is about more than teaching commands. It is about developing clear communication, dependable behavior, and confident owners who know how to maintain their dog’s training long after the program is complete.

Every dog is different. Their training should be, too.

Whether you are raising a family companion, addressing serious behavioral concerns, or developing a service dog your training program will be designed around your dog, your goals, and the real-world situations you face together.

About the Trainer

Madeline Romito

Owner and Trainer, TopTierK9 Blackwater Bay

I am a Navarre Beach local and a graduate of Navarre High School, Pensacola State College, and the University of West Florida.

After college, I joined the United States Coast Guard, where I have served as an Officer in Search and Rescue for more than nine years. That experience shaped the way I approach leadership, communication, accountability, and decision-making under pressure. These same principles are central to the way I train dogs and educate their owners.

I have spent years training dogs across a wide range of disciplines. My experience includes family obedience, behavior modification, and service dogs.

My goal is not simply to return a dog that follows commands. My goal is to help create a reliable dog and a confident, capable owner who understands how to communicate with that dog clearly and consistently.

Who I Work With

I work with dogs and owners from many different backgrounds, including:

  • Families seeking a well-mannered and dependable companion

  • Owners struggling with reactivity, anxiety, aggression, or destructive behavior

  • Individuals who need a properly trained service dog to assist with a disability

  • Veterans and first responders seeking dogs trained to support PTSD-related needs

  • Owners of high-drive or working breeds who need structure and a productive outlet

  • Owners who want a stronger relationship and clearer communication with their dog

Our Training Philosophy

Adaptive Reliability™

My training philosophy is centered on Adaptive Reliability™, an approach created by Top Tier K9 founder Jeff Minder.

Traditional obedience often focuses only on making a dog comply with a command. Adaptive Reliability™ goes further. It teaches the dog how to make the correct decision, even when the environment changes, distractions appear, or the owner is not standing directly beside them.

A truly reliable dog should not only understand what to do in a controlled training session. The dog should be able to apply that training at home, in public, around other animals, and during unfamiliar or stressful situations.

Training is adapted to the individual dog. Temperament, motivation, breed characteristics, prior experiences, and the owner’s goals all influence

how the program is structured.

The dog is only one half of the equation. Owners are taught how to:

  • Communicate clearly and consistently

  • Reinforce desirable behavior

  • Correct unwanted behavior appropriately

  • Recognize changes in body language and emotional state

  • Maintain boundaries without damaging trust

  • Continue developing the dog after formal training ends

  • The result is not robotic obedience. It is a dog that understands expectations, makes better decisions, and can function reliably in the real world.

Dog Training Programs

Basic Obedience

Basic obedience creates the foundation for a manageable and enjoyable family dog.

Training may include:

  • Sit

  • Down

  • Climb

  • Recall

  • Leash manners

  • Appropriate social behavior

The objective is not simply for the dog to perform each command once. The objective is for the dog to respond consistently and for the owner to understand how to maintain that behavior.

Advanced Obedience

Advanced obedience is designed for dogs that have been through Top Tier K9’s Basic Obedience and already understand foundational commands but need greater reliability, control, and independence.

Training may include:

  • Off-leash obedience

  • Distance commands

  • Extended duration work

  • Advanced recall

  • Focus around significant distractions

  • Public-access manners

  • Greater handler responsiveness

  • Reliable decision-making in changing environments

  • Advanced training helps dogs move beyond controlled practice and apply their skills in everyday life.

Board-and-Train Programs

Both Basic and Advanced Obedience courses are Board-and-train programs. They provide structured, immersive training for dogs that need focused development away from their normal routines.

  • Depending on the dog and the owner’s goals, programs will last three or four weeks.

  • During the program, dogs receive consistent daily training, controlled exposure to distractions, structured exercise, rest, and opportunities to practice appropriate behavior in realistic environments.

  • Owner education is an essential part of every board-and-train program. At the completion of each week of training, owners receive instruction on handling, commands, equipment, expectations, and how to continue reinforcement at home.

  • Training does not end when the dog returns home. The transfer of knowledge from trainer to owner is what allows the results to last.

Behavior Modification

Behavior problems are rarely solved by addressing only the visible behavior. Effective behavior modification requires identifying why the behavior occurs and developing a structured plan for changing it.

Programs may address:

  • Reactivity

  • Aggression

  • Fear-based behavior

  • Resource guarding

  • Separation-related behaviors

  • Excessive barking

  • Destructive behavior

  • Poor impulse control

  • Inappropriate social behavior

  • Severe leash pulling

  • Each case is evaluated individually. Behavior modification requires honest expectations, consistent owner participation, and an understanding that meaningful behavioral change is a process rather than a single training session.

Why TopTierK9 Blackwater Bay?

  • Training Designed Around the Individual Dog

  • Dogs are not interchangeable. Training methods must account for temperament, motivation, breed, history, and learning style.

  • Real-World Reliability

  • Commands practiced only in a quiet training area have limited value. Dogs are taught to perform around realistic distractions and in environments they will encounter with their owners.

  • Owner Education

  • Training the dog without training the owner produces temporary results. Owners leave with the knowledge and handling skills needed to continue the dog’s progress.

  • Honest Assessments

  • Not every dog is suited for every job. Owners receive direct & realistic guidance about their dog’s behavior, potential, and training needs.

  • Professional Experience

  • My background in Coast Guard leadership, Search and Rescue, operational decision-making, and dog training provides a disciplined but adaptable approach to every case.

  • Continued Accountability

  • Successful training requires consistency after the formal program ends. The goal is to give owners a clear system they can realistically maintain in daily life.

Reliable Dogs. Confident Owners.

A well-trained dog brings more freedom, safety, and peace into everyday life. A well-trained owner gives the dog the clarity and consistency needed to succeed.

At TopTierK9 Blackwater Bay, we train both.
